Members of the team decided to use the popular fitness event to celebrate Mental Health Month and raise awareness of the link between mental health and physical health.
Designed by the British Special Forces, Tough Mudder is a 20 kilometre obstacle course complete with hills, mud, water, ropes and walls.
The event not only tests strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie, but places huge emphasis is on mateship and fun.
“We decided to do Tough Mudder a number of months ago for a couple of reasons,” said manager of mental health Daniel Hayes.
“The first was to get physically active – we know how easy it can be to go to the pub instead of a walk, or how busy life can get that looking after yourself takes a lower priority – so this challenge has made us choose healthier options.
“The second reason is that we know being physically well contributes to feeling mentally well.”
Over the past few months the team has been preparing to tackle the hardcover adventure challenge in a number of ways, including gym sessions, games of cricket and basketball, healthy eating and reducing alcohol intake.
“It’s amazing to see how small changes over a period of time can lead to significant improvements,” he said.
“I feel fitter and I have lost some weight, but just as importantly I feel happier.”
MML has a range of services Mr Hayes and the team utilised in the lead up to the adrenaline-pumping course.
“We had access to dieticians, GPs, mental health professionals, and others that we have been seeking advice from to help us prepare,” said Shane Thomas, manager of Riverina headspace.
“However, at the end of the day the Tough Mudder course has been an excuse to get more active.
“It isn’t about success or failure; it’s been about having a go.”
