Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Wagga coach, Sally Cox, said volunteering at the centre benefits the entire community.
“I think it builds acceptance within the community of people with disabilities,” she said.
The committee member said children from the able-bodied program the centre runs often volunteer and gain much from the experience.
“It’s a program we run to help raise money for the centre,” she said.
“It’s for able-bodied kids that we run five days a week.
“A lot of the able-bodied kids become volunteers.
“It’s really impressive to see how the teenage kids interact with the kids with disabilities.”
Sally said a group of young people help run a program on Saturdays.
“We run a program on Saturdays where we run lessons for kids with disabilities and we have a team of able-bodied kids aged 12 to 19 who help run the program.
“We don’t have adult volunteers then – (but) they’re obviously supervised by two of our coaches.
The coach said volunteers of any age are sought by the centre.
“We need people to help out during the day, during the week, during the term,” she said.
“We’re going to have a big day on the 20th of July for all returning and beginning volunteers.
“There’s no age limit (minimum age is 12.)”
RDA is a not-for-profit organisation which provides opportunities for anyone with a disability to enjoy safe, healthy, stimulating, therapeutic, horse-related activities.
