Now, men and women from Wagga and across the Riverina are repaying the favour by reaching out to stricken Bookham farmers struggling to cope in the aftermath of shocking bushfires which tore through the Yass Shire.

The widespread fires caused extensive damage to properties in the region, significant losses to livestock and resulted in the mass euthanasia of animals too far gone to be saved.

BlazeAid is a volunteer-based organisation that works with farmers and families in rural Australia after natural disasters to help rebuild fences that have been damaged or destroyed.

The organisation also strives to lift the spirits of farming families and communities facing tough times and a long road to recovery after fire or flood.

Turvey Park man Harry Smith is one of a band of Riverina volunteers who has donated his time to helping Bookham farmers become productive again.

For three weeks Harry has been fencing in the Bookham area alongside men and women from Junee, Mangoplah, Temora and Wagga.

Harry shared his pride in offering practical assistance to farmers facing the daunting task of rebuilding hundreds of kilometers of fence, finding the chance to ease the stress on farmers a rewarding and satisfying experience.

"The BlazeAid organisation of volunteers have focused on external fencing initially, and aim to get farmers to a point where they can properly contain stock," he said.

"Well over 800 kilometres of fencing has been destroyed along the Bogolara, Burrinjuck and Childowla Roads and near Benangaroo and Jugiong."

BlazeAid arrived in Bookham five weeks ago to offer support to farmers of the Harden and Yass Valley Shires.

Harry is encouraging members of the Wagga community to consider donating their time to the BlazeAid campaign in Bookham.

"It's a great way for people to help in the recovery effort," he said.

"Already over 35 kilometres of new fencing has been completed."
