 Wet weather lashes Sydney

Wet weather lashes Sydney

26 Oct, 2009 09:21 AM
Rain is expected to ease over Sydney today following a 24-hour downpour that delivered parts of the city their biggest falls in a year.

Frenchs Forest, on Sydney’s North Shore, received the biggest bucketing, with 112 millimetres of rain falling between 9am Sunday and 6am today, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Duschke said the suburb amassed more than 65 millimetres in a three-hour period yesterday, making it their highest daily rainfall in more than 12 months.

Flash flooding in the area closed Oxford Falls Road at Wakehurst Parkway just after 5.30am.

A power failure in the area also blacked out traffic lights on Wakehurst Parkway at its intersection with Warringah Road, as well as at the intersection of Warringah Road and Ellis Road, according to the RTA.

Audley Weir in Royal National Park is also closed until further notice, the RTA said.

BOM figures show the city’s inner-west copped the second-biggest drenching overnight. Marrickville Golf Club recorded 81 millimetres between 9am yesterday and 6am today.

Chatswood recorded 78 millimetres in the same period, while the Sydney CBD and North Rocks both recorded 68 millimetres.

Mr Duschke said a line of thunderstorms spreading from just west of Sydney Airport to the Central Coast delivered the heavy falls.

Transport chaos

The weather caused chaos on Sydney’s train lines this morning.

CityRail reported 10 minute delays on the Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra, Bankstown, Airport and East Hills and North Shore lines.

And 1900 houses lost power this morning after trees fell over power lines in Pennant Hills, Cheltenham, Frenchs Forest and Beacon Hill.

An Energy Australia spokeswoman said 900 homes lost power for almost three hours in Frenchs Forest and Beacon Hill.

Power was restored to 800 homes by 8am.

One thousand homes were blacked out in Pennant Hills and Cheltenham between 7am and 8.20am.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts the rain will ease today and a shower or two will clear tomorrow.
