Greens' son to be sentenced for dealing cannabis

26 Aug, 2010 01:21 PM
Greens federal Senate candidate Lee Rhiannon has supported her eldest son in court as he awaits sentence for possession of and dealing with more than $290,000 worth of cannabis.

Rory O'Gorman pleaded guilty in June to drug possession and dealing with the proceeds of crime after police found 7.5 kilograms of the drug and about $120,000 in cash at his Bondi Junction apartment.

A sentencing hearing at the Sydney District Court heard that O'Gorman began smoking cannabis heavily following a football accident at the age of 18, in which he broke his back.

His sister, Kilty O'Gorman, told the court he began "self-medicating" to deal with the pain of the injury and the emotional impact of being struck down with such a catastrophic injury in his prime.

He had been making a recovery and was studying at Sydney University when about five years later, in 2003, he was bashed by security guards at a university function and "left for dead", Ms O'Gorman said.

"I think that was the most traumatic experience that Rory has had in his life," she told the court.

She was aware he had been smoking marijuana but was "deeply shocked" when he was arrested for supplying it.

O'Gorman's barrister, Philip Boulten, SC, said his client was no longer smoking cannabis and had become a new father in the past week.

He told the court his client had the strong support of his family.

"A very significant member of his family is in court today," he said.

Ms Rhiannon did not give evidence in the sentence hearing.

The matter was adjourned to September 10.

Ms Rhiannon was a Greens MP in the NSW upper house.

She resigned to run on the Greens NSW ticket for the Senate in this month's federal election.

Counting is continuing, but she is widely tipped to win a Senate seat for the Greens in NSW.

It's great to see the family support the problems which have beset one member. He therefore has a chance at rehabilitation. NO it should not be legalised - it IS a problem and leads to bigger problems. But too many people just wash there hands of someone who has been badly influenced and that person then becomes a bigger problem in our society. Anyone who treats this matter lightly is thoughtless and stupid. It is very difficult for families to rectify situations like this and if you cannot rely on your family, then things aren't real clever!

Yeah, laundering dirty money hey; not unlike the coalitions dependency on corporations of whom many, if scrutinesd put Johns insinuation in respect of any dubious greens campaign funding into perspective.

maybe we should all indulge and then we won't worry about anything or anybody or where we are headed, australia can sink and we won't care, we will all be happily incoherent.

It would appear by the quantity and the large sum of cash found that he is a dealer and does not necessarily have a habit so Rehab may well be irrelevant. As for family support...did nobody notice he was dealing drugs????Before he was charged??? 7kgs is a lot of personal use and it came with $120 large. If this was Tony Abbott or Julia Gillards child then I think it would have made some big news waves .. but the Greens are not troubled by the media, bit like not being questioned on their looney policies.
