Racer aims for world title

31 Mar, 2010 12:31 PM
GO-kart racer Robbie Rashleigh will continue to strive to compete on the world stage, even though his dreams of travelling to Paris next month have been shattered.

Robbie had qualified fifth out of more than 4000 drivers in the first-ever recreational go-kart world series and was gearing up to take part in the grand final in France.

But the 20-year-old was unable to find enough sponsors to help with expenses and he was forced to abandon the trip.

"It's disappointing not to be going after being ranked fifth in the world, but hopefully I will get the chance again one day," Robbie said.

Robbie won six of his seven appearances in the Sodi W Series at Wagga's Rev-Arena Go-Karts, which is the only official representative race track in Australia for this event.

The spray painter, who is in the third year of his apprenticeship at Batkin and Damme Smash Repairs, hones his skills at the weekly competition on Wednesdays at Rev-Arena in Nagle Street.

"We race in teams of four and we get out and have a lot of fun," Robbie said.

"It's a real adrenaline rush ... there's the thrill of seeing how fast you can go and you are sitting close to the ground.

"And the track is set up so well that there are no issues with safety."

Robbie holds the track lap record of 21.51 seconds after bettering the previous mark of 21.67 seconds - established by Dean Sanbrook - in June last year.
