IAIN Robertson is a strong believer in what the Japanese martial art aikido aims to achieve.
The Kapooka army officer became interested in aikido a year ago after achieving black belt status in karate and ninjutsu.
“I was looking for a change and aikido’s techniques and styles were a little different, although it was still geared towards self defence,” Iain said
“Every martial art has a built-in philosophy to make yourself a better person.
“It helps to develop character ... through practice and perseverance you can succeed.
“I think it’s a model for your life, teaching you that if you work at something persistently you will come out on top.”
Aikido is also ideal from a physical perspective, according to Iain.
“It’s great for fitness, co-ordination, balance, timing and posture,” he said.
Iain is taught by Jonathan Temporal, who is an officially recognised instructor in Wagga under Aikido Yuishinkai Australia.
“Aikido is suitable for both men, women and teens, no prior martial arts experience is required at all and you don’t have to be fit to do it,” Jonathan said.
He has been training in aikido for 20 years and holds the rank of fourth dan – or fourth degree black belt.
Jonathan established Wagga Aikido Yuishinkai in August last year, with the club recently moving its base to Workout Gym at the Oasis swimming complex.
Classes are held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 7.30pm to 9pm and every Saturday from 10.30am to noon.
