WAGGA Combined Hockey Association is hoping to be rewarded for its forward thinking with a swell in junior numbers this year.
The association has made the bold move to offer free registration and insurance to players up to the age of 16 in a bid to bolster its younger ranks.
"It will be a significant saving for the junior players," Wagga hockey development officer Karen Boyd said.
Wagga hockey is hosting three come and try days to coincide with its registration and insurance offer.
The first was held yesterday, with more today and tomorrow from 4.30pm to 5.30pm at Jubilee Park.
"We want to show kids how much fun it can be to play hockey," Karen said. "There will be coaches at the come and try days to give those in attendance skill and fitness drills, showing them what hockey is all about."
The hockey season will start on March 27 and will include three juniors competitions between 9am and noon on Saturdays in addition to minkey hockey at 4.30pm on Tuesdays.
"We will look at holding different junior competitions on different days if the numbers warrant it," Karen said.
