FAMILY always came first for Ron Piltz, but hot on its heels in second place was golf.
Ron was so devoted to Kapooka Golf Club – he not only played several times a week but also helped at working bees and fundraisers – that he would often joke about being “dragged away” by special family occasions.
“At his son Adam’s 30th birthday celebration, the comment from Ron was ‘You do realise I’m giving up a golf tournament for you – I hope you appreciate it’ ... but always with a twinkle in the eye,” his widow Hesper said.
When his grandson’s christening date was announced, Ron asked his daughter-in-law: “Did you have to choose a monthly medal day?”
Ron made a number of close friends at the Kapooka club and they showed strong support during his illness in the latter part of his life.
Many of those mates will line up to play in the second Ron Piltz Memorial Classic at Kapooka on Sunday, May 30.
Another organisation close to Ron’s heart was St Vincent de Paul, which will benefit from the money raised at the golf classic.
Ron was a volunteer at St Vinnie’s furniture store in Fitzmaurice Street for more than five years.
He enjoyed working with his hands, helping to fix furniture and even making new parts for the repairs.
Friends and family benefited from Ron buying and bringing home his many “treasures” found at the store.
Ron’s legacy will live on at the golf day carrying more than $800 in cash and prizes.
The three-person ambrose, which has a 9.30am shotgun start, has an entry fee of $20 a player.
Bookings are essential by next Wednesday to Mark Kells on 0412 494 978 or 6971 3007.
Identification for over 18s must be presented at the front gate for entry to the Kapooka Military Area.
