TWO Wagga sporting groups have received grants for new community projects.
Tolland Football Club has received $7200 for its Wolves in the Community project, while Wagga Cycling Club was awarded $4500 for junior velodrome development and a coaching program for regionally disadvantaged young people.
The grants are part of an $850,000 funding program from the state government, which is being shared between 120 projects around NSW.
Sport Minister Kevin Greene said the funding was a boost to health in communities.
“The NSW Government is committed to supporting local sports clubs and helping all NSW residents to improve their health through physical activity,” he said.
Duty MLC for Wagga, Tony Catanzariti, said he was thrilled local groups had been successful in receiving the funds to help extend their programs to a broader cross-section of the community.
“The program provides funds to grass-roots organisations to support local sport and recreation programs,” he said.
“There is a specific focus on helping under-represented or disadvantaged groups who might not be able to take part in mainstream sport.”
Grants for the 2010-11 Sport and Recreation Participation Program are open until July 6, with more information available at www.dsr.nsw.gov.au/grants.
