TRADITIONAL wartime rifles will be seen in action on Saturday when the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia stages a special event to celebrate the Anzac spirit.
The Wagga branch of the association has organised an Anzac Day Shoot for Lee Enfield 303s, a historic service rifle as issued and used during World War I and II.
Legacy will be the biggest winner on the day, with the SSAA donating all money it raises at the Big Springs Rifle Range to the charity.
“The focus of the day’s shoot is to recognise the sacrifice made by men and women of the Australian Armed Forces who served their country in all wars, and to celebrate the legend of the Anzacs and their Lee Enfield rifles,” SSAA committee member Greg Hannon said.
“In previous years we have had informal shoots at the range on Anzac Day, but nothing significant such as this event.”
A perpetual trophy and medals have been donated by the Wagga Restoration Centre and will be awarded to the top three competitors on the day.
The event will give the SSAA the chance to showcase the improvements at the range, which is situated at Livingstone State Forest via O’Brien’s Creek Road.
One of the branch’s greatest assets is its new clubhouse – the old Wagga Motors service shed which was a gift from Jacques and Co Builders.
Major earthworks have also been carried out by Bruce Milne and a band of helpers, while a shotgun range has been built on a section of the site.
“This year’s plans are well under way, with the proposed extension of a section of our existing range to 300 metres to accommodate a vast array of competitions and disciplines,” Greg said.
Saturday’s event for SSAA members and licensed target shooters starts at 1pm at the range south of Wagga. Members of the public are welcome to watch the action and find out more about the club.
