Gainsford-Taylor to host Wagga sprint clinic

08 Jul, 2009 12:00 AM
TALENTED young athlete Maddison McIntyre knows how she can get a head start on her rivals for next season.

The nine-year-old will be among members of Wagga's Little Athletics clubs attending the free Speed For Sport Coaching Clinic next week.

Maddison, a South Wagga Public School pupil, is looking to build on her pace after featuring prominently in the 100, 200 and 400 metres at several carnivals last season.

She will be one of the youngsters benefitting from the words of wisdom of the clinic's special guest Melinda Gainsford-Taylor.

Gainsford- Taylor started out in Little Athletics before progressing to an Australian Olympian and world champion.

"This is a great opportunity for kids in our area," Wagga Little Athletics Club president Mark Sawer said.

"The aim of the clinic is to provide all participants with the knowledge to improve their sprinting technique and speed, acceleration and agility."

Open to all athletes between the ages of eight and 16, the clinic will be held at Jubilee Park on Friday, July 17, and registrations can be made online at www.littleathletics.com.au.

Participants need to arrive at 9.30am for a 10am start, with activities running through to 1pm.

The official launch off the 2009-10 Little Athletics season will be held following the clinic.
