RILEY Briggs is going places in a hurry – and he is doing it without getting out of a walk.
The nine-year-old member of the Wagga Little Athletics Club has emerged as a rising star in the walking ranks and is looking to enhance his reputation at the regional carnival at Finley this weekend.
Riley has competed in the 1100-metre walk on only two occasions and could not have been more impressive in winning both events.
He progressed from the Wagga club carnival to breaking the under 10s record at Eastern Riverina Zone level.
“I enjoy long-distance running but I thought I would try the walk for something different,” Riley said.
“It’s challenging because the technique is tricky.”
Riley is coached in the walk by Mark Sawer, while he receives running tuition from Mark Conyers.
He will be part of a strong Wagga representation at the Finley carnival.
The Wagga club will have 25 members competing and Kooringal-Wagga has 35 youngsters taking part – all with their eyes on a berth at the State Championships.
The Lions Club’s generosity continued when a $2000 cheque was handed over to the oxygen bank. Formed in July last year, the oxygen bank raises money through trivia nights, club donations and private pledges.
The group will hold another major fundraiser on Monday with a card party at the Rules Club from 12.30pm. Bookings can be made with Marjorie on 6921 3919.
