THE Wagga GP After Hours Service has been operating since 2003 and has become a vital component of the city's health services.
As a collaborative of the city's general practices, the service operates outside normal surgery hours to provide urgent GP after hours care to patients who would otherwise have to attend the Wagga Base Hospital emergency department.
Since opening, the service has treated more than 30,000 patients and GPs have made over 1200 home visits.
The service is not only available to residents of Wagga and surrounding communities but also services the large number of tourists and visitors to the city.
This is a vital service, especially for parents of young children with approximately 25 per cent of patients being children under the age of 10 years.
Feedback about the service has been overwhelmingly positive with one young mother stating: "Thank you for providing such a service on weekends, it is very handy for mothers with young ones.'"
Other comments include "You guys are doing a wonderful job, keep it up'", as well as "Excellent service" and "Please keep this service going, it is invaluable. Without fail my children get sick on weekends.'"
The service operates 365 days per year with the clinic open for two four-hour sessions on Sundays and public holidays and one session in the evening every other day.
A GP is also on-call to carry out home visits for urgent medical treatment.
