Wagga gets 'clean up' message

03 Mar, 2010 11:43 AM
MOTHER Leah Elliott believes nobody is ever too young to learn the Clean Up Australia Day message.

Leah's daughter Imogen is only three years old but she has already been told what the day is all about.

"It's a great concept for the community to support and I think it's even better when the kids get involved," Leah said.

Wagga City Council has organised several events in conjunction with Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday.

Wagga businesses played their role yesterday, while 13 schools will help to clean up on Friday and 15 community groups have already registered to take part on Sunday. Families and individuals are encouraged to register their participation directly with Clean Up Australia on www.cleanup.org.au or on 1300 282 329.

"Volunteers may also register on the day outside the Historic Council Chambers between 8am and 10.30am," council's natural resource management officer Alice Kent said.

"Suitable clothing, footwear and sun protection should be worn."

Council will host a clean-up area in addition to sites in Central Wagga, North Wagga, Red Hill Road, Tolland, Glenfield, the Silvalite Reserve at Ashmont and two on the Murrumbidgee River. With the event turning 20, the theme is "just one" - if every Australian picked up just one piece of rubbish then 20 million bits of litter would be removed from the environment.

Residents are certain to take advantage of council's free tip day to coincide with Clean Up Australia Day. Gregadoo Waste Management Centre will open Sunday from 7am to 4.30pm.
