THE times have changed dramatically in the past 100 years or so.
A black-and-white photo, believed to be from the late 1800s or early 1900s and taken from near where the Wagga courthouse stands today, shows a few horses and carts – and little else – on the dirt thoroughfare on Fitzmaurice Street.
Dominating the view of the modern-day version of the picture are cars, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. But a closer look highlights how the busy street has maintained several of its landmark buildings, albeit now a little different.
Most notable is the building on the corner on the right – known back in the early 1900s as the Commercial Hotel while these days it’s Romano’s Hotel.
“Wagga is lucky to have a modern CBD which retains the history of the city,” Mayor Kerry Pascoe (pictured) said.
The city’s older buildings will be in the limelight during History Week.
Wagga City Library will present Walking The Streets Of Wagga – a 90-minute tour which will have participants strolling down the streets of the past.
The tour includes afternoon tea served by the lagoon and will be held next Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm, starting from the library on the corner of Baylis and Morrow streets.
No bookings are required and the event is free.
