Teenagers to learn to deal with issues at girls only camp

07 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
BEING a teenager in modern society can be challenging, and many girls will at some times struggle with issues related to peer pressure, relationships, family and school expectations, body image and media stereotyping, social labelling, bullying and self-esteem.

It can also be a difficult time for parents, educators and other adults facing the difficult task of assisting teenage girls to become more resilient so they can evolve into confident and secure young women.

To help girls discover the skills they need to deal with the emotional and physical issues going on in their lives, the Borambola Centre will host a special new holiday program centred on equipping young women with the knowledge they need to lead positive lives.

The program, developed by the office of communities ? sport and recreation activity experts, will take place at the centre from January 16 to 20.

As a 'girls only space', this five day camp will offer a mix of fun, physical activities with 'Enlightened Education' sessions that aim to boost the wellbeing and confidence of teenage girls aged between 13 and 17 years.

Participants will explore a number of related topics that impact on teenagers today, including the mixed media and social messages about having a perfect body, the influence of fashion, managing money, study and workplace skills, personal safety, stress management and having healthy friendships.

The programs are designed to help girls to love the skin you're in by decoding those mixed social messages and reconnecting with the core values and self-belief that become lost in adolescence.

"We are really excited to be able to present this all girls camp to the community," said program coordinator at Borambola Michelle Clarke.

"In setting up the program, we consulted with a lot of teenage girls to come up with a design that would be relevant to their lives and cater for their needs."
