Students get a taste of science

24 Jun, 2009 01:00 AM
THE thought of having a leaf insect crawl across their arm did not bug Mount Austin High School students Taylor Hodge and Rebecca Rutter.

They were only too happy to get up close with creepy crawlies – such as the phasmid – as they explored Science In The Bush at Charles Sturt University this week.

Taylor and Rebecca were among 1020 students who took part in 72 activities, which gave the youngsters a first-hand experience of the science surrrounding them every day.

"The whole program picks up on the recognition that in Australia we must do more to interest the kids in science," Dean of Science at CSU Nick Klomp said.

Mount Austin, The Riverina Anglican College, Holy Trinity Primary, Lutheran Primary and Mater Dei Primary were among the 22 schools which took part in the program run by the Australian Museum and the University of Sydney.

"Students have fun while they learn and are introduced to new concepts and equipment not necessarily available in their schools," the University of Sydney's Professor David Day said.
