Party is the 'mane' event

28 Jul, 2010 11:32 AM
HORSES around Australia will celebrate their birthday at the weekend, but a special party for Gidget will make the much-loved pony stand out from the rest.

The Wagga Riding for the Disabled Association’s (RDA) mascot will be the centre of attention at the Uranquinty Hotel on Saturday as her 24th birthday rolls around.

Too small to use as a riding pony for those with disabilities, Gidget has been seen in a variety of other roles for the RDA.

“Over the years she has attended many playgroup functions as a petting pony, led the RDA riders in street parades and attended many RDA activities to carry the banner,” said Uranquinty’s Heather Baker, who won Gidget in a raffle as a two-year-old.

Gidget has become an icon at Uranquinty, where she pulls a cart around the streets every Christmas Eve and her driver hands out lollies to children.

This will be Gidget’s second party at the Uranquinty Hotel.

“Last year it was decided to reward Gidget with a party at the pub,” Heather said. “She wore a special nappy and went inside to enjoy a little drink and birthday cake.

“Gidget mingled with the crowd and revelled in all the attention.

“The night was such a success that we have decided to do it again – and everyone, young and old, is welcome.”

Gidget’s party will start at 6.30pm and will feature karaoke, competitions and prizes.

Cost of $15 for adults and $7.50 for children will include a meal, birthday cake and lucky door prize.

Tickets are available at the hotel, the RDA on 6922 3550 or Heather on 6922 9797.
