Memories revived on Anzac Day

21 Apr, 2010 01:10 PM
MANY of Jack Calder’s wartime mates are gone, but they will live on in his memories when he takes part in the Anzac Day march in Wagga.

The spritely 87-year-old will be among the veterans who will be in the spotlight on Baylis Street from 10.30am on Sunday.

“I am the last one left from my Melbourne unit,” Jack said.

Jack looks forward to Anzac Day with pride.

“It’s a day put aside for us to remember what bloody idiots we were ... but we were doing something which had to be done,” he said.

Jack enjoys seeing the younger generation become involved in Anzac Day.

“A lot more interest has been shown by the young ones in the past three or four years, which is great,” he said.

“There was a time when we wouldn’t talk about the war but we have opened up more as we have got older ... and I think that’s helped to renew interest in Anzac Day.”
