Marea’s hat success is a feather in her cap

28 Apr, 2010 03:26 PM
MAREA Bright has forged a reputation as a world-class milliner, but she has not forgotten where it all began.

She has dedicated close to five decades to making her mark on the fashion world after receiving her qualified millinery certificate at Wagga College in 1964.

“I have been making hats almost every day since qualifying,” Marea said.

At one stage Marea was assistant to Frederick Fox, who was the milliner for Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family.

Despite reaching such lofty heights, Marea still has a soft spot for Wagga.

And there is one event in particular – the Wagga Gold Cup carnival – which holds a special place in Marea’s heart.

“I love coming back for the Wagga Gold Cup,” Marea said.

“In fact I have missed only two since becoming a milliner.”

Marea kick-started her career in Wagga when she was invited to work at Vernon’s Accessories in 1965.

“Vernon had a millinery department and she wanted to have a milliner in store,” Marea said.

“In 1966 I felt I wanted my own Marea McIntyre label so I could develop my style and attend to my own customers.

“There were personal needs for racing, wedding and casual headwear.

“Much is still the same today.”

“There is an old saying that it pays to purchase a quality product – and it’s true. I have seen some of the hats which I made 30 years ago recycled and sold from op shops, taking out first prize in Fashions on the Field.”

Marea is again using her experience and style to make Wagga Gold Cup racegoers look great for Friday, May 7.

She can be found at First Attraction Clothing boutique at 117 Baylis Street – making special Cup day orders for those who get in early – before returning to her salon at Level 1 in the Centre Way Arcade on Collins Street in Melbourne.
