Lutheran Primary raise money for animals

23 Feb, 2012 05:00 AM
WHILE their Lutheran Primary School peers were busy having fun in the playground, four close friends were discussing ways they could raise money for neglected and unloved animals.

Year six pupils Brittany Wiggins, Sarah Wood, Natasha Lubke and Annaliese Bourke planned, coordinated and organised their very own fundraiser for the RSPCA.

Only weeks ago Annaliese had her first vision of the fundraiser.

She was inspired by the possibilities the idea offered and the difference the money could make in the lives of forgotten animals across the city.

She approached her best friends, Brittany, Sarah and Natasha with her idea, in the hope the girls would help her make the dream a reality.

All passionate animal lovers, the girls quickly agreed to help Annaliese and it wasn’t long before the group were beginning the process of turning the idea into a successful fundraiser.

“We came up with a few ideas together and decided the best one was a cake stall and lucky dip,” Brittany said.

“We all thought it would be best to hold the cake stall out the front of my house in Tatton because my street is busy.

“We put around flyers and signs and told everyone at school.”

The girls admit it wasn’t easy to organise the fundraiser, conceding at times they did not believe the fundraiser would reach fruition.

“We really weren’t sure if it would happen,” Natasha said.

“At times it was really hard but we kept trying.”

With help from their families, the girls did all of the cooking for the cake stall by themselves.

“We were originally all going to meet at the one house to do all the cooking but we ended up just doing it at our own houses and bringing it all to Brittany’s,” Sarah said.

“We cooked cookies, slice, cupcakes and brownies.”

Along with the cake stall and lucky dip, the community

minded foursome also

conducted a door knock. Their hard work and dedication paid dividend for the Wagga branch of the RSPCA, with the girls raising a total of $106.30.

“We all have pets, between us we have chicken, fish, dogs, rabbits, cats and birds,” Annaliese said. “We thought this could be a way to help the animals that do not have homes.”

Wagga RSPCA branch president Jean Spurge

admitted she was stunned and amazed to learn the young girls had organised their own fundraiser and wished to donate the money to the volunteer organisation. “It was just such a wonderful thing for these girls to do,” Jean said.

“It is great to think these young girls thought of the idea by themselves and than set out to raise the money for us.

“We are very thankful to them because each dollar raised makes a difference.”
