SUE Parker has ridden from one era to another since her first experience on a motorbike as an11-year-old.
There were no heated handgrips or electronic tyre pressure sensors when Sue was learning to ride on the family farm 35 years ago.
And her need for speed resulted in her being one of the few girls competing in enduro and motocross events.
“The boys used to hate it when I won,” Sue said.
Turn the clock forward to today and it’s a totally different story.
Sue has a flash red BMW F 650 GS enduro bike which she rides purely for pleasure and she is president of the Redback Tourers Wagga social motorcycle club.
“When I was young it was not common for girls to be riding motorbikes,” she said. “But there are a lot more girls on bikes these days.”
Sue’s passion for riding motorbikes has carried through to her daughters Crystal, 17, Emily, 15, and Adeline, 11.
“My three girls all ride the motorbike around the farm,” she said
There are 20 members – seven of them female – of the Redback club, which organises day trips once a month as well as the occasional weekend away and fundraising events.
“We have different types of bikes and enjoy riding together and each other’s company,” Sue said.
“It’s great to mix with people who have the same interests.”
