Group is giving street kids hope

21 Apr, 2010 12:00 AM
A SMALL group from Wagga is dedicating its efforts to improving the lives of orphans thousands of kilometres away.

Kuleana Kids, which comprises five women, has been raising money to help out street children living in the African country of Tanzania.

"We are good friends with the same passion for helping kids," said Kate Bowyer, who is relocating to the Tanzanian city of Mwanza in August to begin employment as a project co-ordinator and developer.

"I came back from my first volunteer trip to Tanzania knowing how much assistance these street kids needs.

"These kids are motivated and driven survivors, who just need someone to help them create an opportunity to succeed."

From the money Kuleana Kids raised last year, $4500 was used to pay for schooling.

"Public education is free in Tanzania, but nothing is provided for the children," Kate said.

"The money we raise helps them to buy uniforms, their desks and school books, and even pay the sewerage and water bills."

"Our goal is to support the street children to become successful Tanzanian citizens."

A live performance from a Congolese band will highlight the Kuleana Kids' major fundraiser at the Wagga RSL Club from 7pm on Saturday, May 8.

The touring band from Shepparton will sing, dance and drum exciting and vibrant African music.

The night will include auctions and raffles and a late DJ to dance the rest of the night away.

Tables are made up of 10 people and and can be booked by calling Kate on 0439 776 293.

Tickets cost $50 and include light food refreshments, coffee and tea, while alcoholic beverages are available through the club.

They can be bought at Don Tuckwell's Audio, by contacting Kate, emailing info@kuelanakids.com.au or on the night.
