Elders thrilled with hall

31 Mar, 2010 12:36 PM
WIRADJURI elders of Wagga have finally found a place to call their own.

The Wiradjuri people in the area have never before had a meeting place to use for their own purposes.

An official opening has been held at the new headquarters on Jack Avenue which was given to the elders by the Department of Housing.

The elders have not met since May last year due to having nowhere to gather.

Renovated and fully furnished, the hall is occupied rent free.

One room is still available to hire out, but at all other times it is fully for the use of the Wiradjuri people.

"We can handle everything now," treasurer Gail Manderson said.

Prior to occupying the hall, the elders had no place to keep legal documents which were essential to Aboriginal families so they could gain housing .

They also plan to begin a traditional dance group, teach young boys to play didgeridoo, and run programs for craft, cooking and art.

"I feel we're the heart of the city," elders chairperson Isabel Reid stated.

"We're really here for the whole community. Just because we're an Aboriginal group doesn't mean we aren't here to help the entire community. It was really great of them (the Department of Housing) to do this for us."

The elders' main goal is to get kids off the streets using funds they gain from performing traditional welcoming ceremonies at events.

They also plan to begin training for other elders to take the place of the current five women in time.

Isabel revealed that any documentation requires four signatures of the elders.

"Just because you're old doesn't make you an elder," Isabel explains.

"The people around you have to know you and trust your judgement."

Isabel works alongside Gail Manderson, Kath Withers, Pat Dacey and Joyce Hampton.
