WAGGA couple Douglas and Marie Edgar are an exception to the common traditions of Valentines Day.

For many, Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year couples make a special effort to express their love and affection in simple or extravagant ways – with the importance of treasuring their loved one forgotten for the remaining 364.

The pair, who will celebrate their 69th wedding anniversary on March 8, said the secret to their long and happy marriage is making the effort and time to ensure their other half knew how much they were loved.

“Our marriage has lasted 69 years because we just love each other and we both know that,” Marie said.

“You have to let the other person know – and it doesn’t have to be hard or expensive.

“Just hold hands.”

Marie admitted a couple also needs to have strong compatibility to last nearly seven decades together.

“You have to want and enjoy the same things,” she said.

“Family was always so important to both of us but we also enjoyed playing cards together and participating in social

encounters.”

Marie and Douglas were married in the Presbyterian Church in Moree in 1943.

The pair met when Douglas, a banker, was transferred to Moree in 1939.

The loving couple enjoyed only a short period of happy bliss in each others company before outbreak of war saw Douglas join the Royal Australian Airforce.

“I served in the Royal Australian Air Force for four and a half years,” he said.

“After a year of training I was recruited as an instructor.

“While the boys who learnt with me headed off to London to fly Spitfires, I was teaching young blokes how to fly the Tiger Moths that I had only learnt to fly a year before.

“Like a lot of people who served in the war, during those four years I did many various things but I never served overseas.”

After learning Douglas would not be overseas bound to defend London, the smitten couple made the difficult decision to marry during wartime.

“In 1943 Marie and I decided to get married because I wasn’t going to London and we thought why put it off,” Douglas said.

“Unlike many other couples who were separated by the war, we had the opportunity to get married.”

When fighting ceased in 1945 Douglas returned to his role with the Moree bank.

For nearly 15 years Douglas and Marie travelled extensively, spending time living in Inverell, Dubbo, Sydney, Grafton and Wagga.

“We moved around a lot,” he said.

“Eventually we settled in Sydney where we lived for about 45 years or so.

“We were in Sydney right up until the 1st of June 2007 when we moved to Wagga to live in Riverina Gums.

“We had lived in Wagga between 1959 and 1963 and had children here when we moved here in 2007.”

Douglas and Marie have four children, Judith, Malcolm, Susan and Robyn, 14 grand children, 8 great grand children and one great-great grand child.

The loving couple agree raising their family is their proudest achievement and the highlight of their lives.

“We have found life pretty good because of the wonderful family we have,” Douglas said.

“We are well content which I feel is the secret to a long, happy and healthy life.”

Douglas and Marie, both aged 91, marked their 69th anniversary with the help of two of their children who live in Wagga.

“For didn’t do anything really big for it, but our son and daughter who live in Wagga did come and visit,” Douglas said.

“We really didn’t need anything special because our kids gave us a great party for our 80th birthdays.

“They hired a Scout Hall in Sydney and our family came from all over to be involved.

“It was a real family party with lots of little one’s running or crawling around.

“It was great.”
