BRETT Dohl continues to push his body to the limit in training as the most gruelling challenge of his life draws near.
The Wagga man is confident of achieving his goal of riding a pushbike from Ronald McDonald House in Parkville, Melbourne, to Wagga in memory of his brother Luke, who died 20 years ago of Burkitt’s lymphona at the age of eight.
Brett’s 437-kilometre journey – starting on Sunday, July 4 – will begin at a place where Luke received extensive treatment over an 11-month period.
“I have been riding between 100 and 150 kilometres a week and I try to do a big ride a week,” Brett said.
“I’m still going to the gym three times a week and I am feeling ready to go.”
Brett has already raised $4500 by hosting a number of events and aims to boost the figure to $50,000 with the ride.
Seven per cent of the money will go to The Kids Kottage Appeal in Wagga, while the remaining 30 per cent is for Ronald McDonald House at Parkville.
He will arrive in Wagga on Saturday, July 10, with a sports memorabilia auction scheduled to start at 7pm that night.
Items for auction include signed 2010 guernseys for Hawthorn, the Brumbies and Collingwood, a match-worn Brisbane Lions guernsey, Collingwood supporters pack and the bike Brett is riding on.
The major raffle will be drawn on the night, with first prize a $1000 open order at The Good Guys Wagga, second is two return flights from Wagga to Sydney or Melbourne flying REX and third is three months membership at Flex-It Gym.
Tickets are available at The Good Guys, Fantastic Furniture and Powers Plumbing and Insulation.
Brett is still looking for sponsors or donations per kilometre for his ride.
