Access Aware says thanks to volunteers

19 May, 2010 03:26 PM
Access Aware thanked accessibility volunteers in Volunteer Week 2010 for their work in making business owners in Wagga more aware of access standards.

Volunteer ambassadors are at the heart of the Access Aware project, assisting the project officer, John Donoghue, to build an online database of accessible businesses and facilities.

Access affects a range of individuals; including people with disability, older people, women with prams and children, shoppers, people with injuries and delivery people. In Australia, one in five people has a disability; the number is even greater when considering other groups that have access difficulties.

Volunteers are able to assist these individuals directly by informing business owners about ways that they can improve the accessibility of their building.

Businesses that conform to access standards are given a free listing and advertisement on the Access Aware databases at www.accessaware.com.au.

“Ambassadors are invaluable, we are always looking for more volunteers who are able to offer the generous gift of time in return for a chance to make a difference in the lives of over 20 per cent of Australians,” John Donoghue said.
